Barrie police charge man for taking natural gas

A 36-year-old man has been charged for stealing natural gas from a Barrie residence in the area of Ferndale Drive and Ardagh Road.

In a joint investigation with Enbridge Gas, Barrie police were called to a Nicolson Drive residence regarding the theft of natural gas from a line that had been turned off due to non-payment.

According to police, the gas had been turned off at the residence on Dec. 2 but the equipment had been tampered with and the gas turned back on.

On Dec. 13, police say Enbridge Gas went to the residence again and turned off the gas, removing the improper hook-up.

Police say the man turned himself into police on Sunday and was charged with theft under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000.

No one should ever tamper with gas fittings, according to Enbridge Gas spokeswoman Chris Meyer.

"The safety of our customers, the public and employees is our ongoing priority," she said. "Tampering with a meter or piping can pose a significant safety risk.

"When Enbridge Gas Distribution encounters suspected theft of gas, it is our practice to contact the local police and take steps to ensure the situation is left safe," she added.
