The Barrie Royals Minor Atom Team (U11) claimed the Ontario Basketball Association Division 3 title in the Ontario Cup Championship, April 1st-3rd in London. The team’s commanding “for and against” differential secured their berth in the Gold/Silver game, following the round robin 3-way tie for first place. The Gold Medal game would find the Royals playing against the evenly matched Mississauga Monarchs. At the half, the Royals were trailing 18-6. However, the Royals owned the second half, demonstrating superb defense as well as perseverance at the basket in order to rally back to a 27-24 win to claim the Championship.
Coach Christine Cranstone is pleased with the team’s multiple gold medal wins this season. When asked what makes her most proud, Cranstone stated, “The way the team conducts themselves in competition. Rather than solely focusing on winning, they work on playing to the best of their ability and rising to the next level of play at all times. This attitude has resulted not only in a gold medal win but also in respect from Convenors, Coaches and Officials throughout the league. It has been a privilege to lead such a dignified group of athletes who continually display acts of sportsmanship in any and all situations."

The team began the year with 6 returning players and 6 players, new to basketball. Although the girls have lots of fun together, parents credit not only Cranstone, but also Assistant Coach Lawrence Fisker, and the support of Marg Mulder, (a longtime member of the Barrie Royals’ family), with bringing the 12 girls together to form a tenacious, focused team.
