In a recent edition of The Barrie Examiner, MP Patrick Brown finally commented on his leader's decision to suspend Parliament, which was scheduled to resume on the 25th of January, until the 3rd of March: Brown's main concern seems to be that he will be seen as continuing to collect his salary, without going to work, during his extended absence from Parliament. If Brown indeed has a "heavy schedule of events" in February, I haven't been able to find it. On his web site, a page listing "UPCOMING EVENTS" has not been updated since the summer of 2009. I then went to Brown's Facebook page and clicked on the Events tab and was greeted with the message "Patrick Brown does not have any upcoming events." A quick scan of his twitter messages fails to turn up any mention of events in February.

Then there is the question of whether attending events that are "supporting local causes" is an MP's job. In my opinion, a Member of Parliament's job can be summed up in two letters: MP. In case you've forgotten, Patrick, the 'P' stands for Parliament. If you're ouf of Parliament for 82 consecutive days, you're not doing your job. We don't pay MPs a salary of more than $150,000 per year to attend local charity events. Seeing how you went to all the trouble of becoming a lawyer, I'm rather surprised that you seem more interested in posing for pictures than working on legislation.I can understand people being upset when highly paid public servants extend their own, already generous, winter break, but I don't think that's the main reason people are upset with Mr. Harper and the Conservatives. The Conservatives didn't promise us that the House of Commons would be in session for a certain number of days per year when they were elected. They did, however, promise us a government that would be accountable and transparent. Mr. Harper didn't suspend Parliament to gives his MPs time off to watch the Olympics, he did it to avoid being held accountable by opposition MPs for his policy on the transfer of Afghan detainees. By continuing to ignore an order of Parliament to provide uncensored documents relating to that policy to a House of Commons committee, Mr. Harper and the Conservatives are showing us once again that their government is anything but transparent.

Perhaps Marg McNeil has read and watched the very sad happenings in Ottawa to see what a knife attack can do to an officer, his family, friends and fellow officers. Thankfully our officers in Barrie were in a position to defend themselves so they could go home to their families. It is an officer's job to serve the community but not to suffer injury and death because of it.
I applaud the Province's decision to award these two officers the Medal of Bravery.

Patrick Brown's recent editorial "Still time for province to change its course on HST" has caught the attention of national political columnist and host of CTV's Question Period, Jane Taber, who described Brown as "a clever contortionist with his pen". I suppose Brown and his government think they were clever to deflect responsibility for their HST-enabling legislation, Bill C-62, by calling it the "Provincial Choice Tax Framework Act". Bill C-62 was not "Adopted earlier this year" as Brown claims. It was introduced two weeks ago and passed the House of Commons five days later. Ottawa insiders may consider this clever, but I suspect ordinary people will see it as deceitful. Brown goes on to point out that the provincial portion of HST in the Atlantic provinces is 8% and then calls for Ontario to reduce it's portion of the HST by 4four percentage points, from 8% to 4%. In 2008-2009 PST was responsible for more than 25% of the Ontario government's tax revenue. How does Mr. Brown expect the provincial government to fund the lion's share of important projects like the RVH expansion and the Simcoe Muskoka Cancer Care Centre if it slashes it's revenues? Incidentally, the federal Conservatives are the only level of government not contributing to the $400-million cost of that project. Don't bother telling us how your government has increased transfer payments to the provinces for health care, Mr. Brown, because those increases were set in law that was passed before your government took office. The reason many people don't like the HST is the provincial portion of sales tax will soon apply to many things that previously were only subject to the federal sales tax, the GST. Mr. Brown calls for the province to exempt "gasoline, home heating, condo fees, new home sales, funeral costs" and "registration fees for minor hockey". Mr. Brown, why is it OK for your government to tax all those things (GST), if you don't think it's OK for the provincial government to do the same?

The Earth has always been Round "Alexandria, VA – ABC, CBS and NBC’s collective silence on “ClimateGate” has reached ridiculous levels as the broadcast networks continued to ignore the great and growing scandal. The bias by omission has become scandalous. The networks’ silence on ClimateGate is deafening. Scandal, cover-ups and conspiracy are the bread and butter of the media. Yet they have selectively and deliberately decided not to report this bombshell – or any of the incriminating details surrounding the scandal–because it goes against their left-wing agenda," by Brian Bozell, Media Research President. To continue the absurd proposition that we are engulfed in man-made ‘global warming’ is tantamount to stating that Galileo was wrong, that the earth has always been flat. It is also a confirmation that quotes of this distorted nature, from Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace, “It doesn’t matter what is true; it only matters what people believe is true….You are what the media define you to be. Greenpeace became a myth and a myth-generating machine,” will soon rule the human mind and indeed the entire world.

Science and politicized environmentalism are colliding worlds. Capitalism supports science; the height of pursuing truth. Fascism supports politicized environmentalism, the depth of distorting truth.Capitalism can thrive without war. It is a producer of goods and services. Capitalism trades with other countries.Fascism depends on the demise of Capitalism. Fascism destroys goods and services necessitating invasion against other countries. It must be a priority of the major media and governments to turn this Fascist onslaught around. You owe it to 'our children' and all the people that pay the ultimate price for these continued lies. Dethrone this massive perversion of global warming!

Ontario has for years been doling out welfare and disability benefits to the undeserving and the total of those payments has now topped $1.2 billion, Auditor General Jim McCarter said yesterday in his annual report. The best one i heard of yet is a couple that did get caught after tallying $104,000 and are now paying the government back at $60/month!m Please Dalton McGuinty give your head a shake get your own business going and see what its like to go bankrupt with your own money!Dave M.

In response to Paul MacIsaac's letter regarding Laws for youths, adults can't be cut and dry, it is apparent that he has never lost a loved one. After a person has committed a crime as horrific in nature as that of Nickolas Bullock, we are not worried about the 'personal risk' of this individual. He killed someone and should serve out his 'adult sentence' as given. What deterrent is there for youth if this is the president? Cushy sentence in a cushy youth facility. Please don't let him feel as though he is in danger. We wouldn't want that now would we? I myself raised a teenage nephew who decided he would take a samurai sword and stab an up and coming firefighter. Punctured his spleen which he later lost, and his lung. What did my nephew get? Two years probation and this was after he had been caught for stealing two vans, both of which belonged to us. He also broke into our home and stole our daughter's coin collection that he had helped build. The police knew full well it was him but had no concrete proof other than the fact that his brother admitted to me that they did it. But then to get an admissible admission, the police would have to advise him that he could have a lawyer present. They didn't bother, too much paperwork and effort for something that they knew would not be punishable in the end. Something is very wrong with the justice system in Canada and events like these will keep happening until the laws are changed. I hope that Paul McIssac never finds himself in the middle of one of these situations, he might just have a change of heart. Lisa Morgan

Re: "Work of Tory MP putting Liberals to shame" nnisfil resident and frequent letter writer Richard Reilly must be disappointed to learn that his MP, Peter Van Loan, voted in favour of his government's HST-enabling legislation yesterday. Given the amount of opposition Mr. Reilly has shown toward the HST, he must feel betrayed now that his MP has given the HST the green light, and after Mr. Reilly wrote such a nice letter him! Just for the record, Barrie MP Patrick Brown and Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton also voted in favour of the HST-enabling legislation. Simcoe-Grey MP Helena Guergis apparently was absent during the vote.
