WILKINS WALK/HEWITT’S CREEK TO LAKE SIMCOE NATURE WALK
Saturday September 23rd, Barrie’s Brereton Field Naturalists Club will be walking on some of the nicest wooded trails to be found within Barrie. The trail runs down into the lower woods where we hike alongside the striking Hewitt Creek as it finalizes its run into Lake Simcoe. Meet at Little Lake Park at 7:15 in the morning and car pool to south end of Barrie or meet Paul on little Walnut Street (Big Bay Pt Rd E to Pine Drive to Walnut Cres.) at 7:30 in the morning. We’ll be keeping an eye out for Indigo Buntings, Red-Tailed Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, Cedar Waxwings, Red Breasted Nuthatches, Downy Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers, Pileated Woodpeckers, various Warblers and different types of Sparrows. We may find Green and Blue Herons, Kingfishers and numerous wonderful migrating waterfowl in the lake at the shoreline. Novice birders and nature lovers are most welcome.
Note: There are no washrooms along the trail and at a minimum it takes two full hours there and back. Easy to moderate walking with a couple of steep hills. Bring your binoculars, camera, snacks and water. No pets are permitted along on o
