Yesterday saw the start of OFSAA action for a handful of boys' volleyball teams in and around Barrie.
The Innisdale Invaders, playing in London for the 'AAAA' title, started on the wrong foot with a straight sets loss to Mississauga's Rick Hansen Secondary School. The squad rebounded with two-set victory over Oakville Trafalgar, making their final match against fourth-seeded Ursuline College of Chatham a must-win to advance to the next round. Unfortunately, a 25-17, 25-21 loss in that crucial game means that they will enter the consolation side of the tournament today.
St. Theresa's Thunder, from Midland, are the GBSSA's 'AAA' representatives, and went 0-3 in Stratford through yesterday's competition. A tough opening loss to Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School of St. Catharines left the team needing a victory over LaSalle's Sandwich Secondary School. The Thunder were unable to take a bite out of their opponents, dropping their second straight match. A third loss in the evening to Kingston's Holy Cross left the group with one final round-robin game this morning.
There's been no luck for Penetanguishene Secondary School, either. Playing in Sarnia, the 'AA' squad dropped matches to Central Elgin Collegiate Institute and Sutton District High School, both in straight sets. The evening saw a glimmer of hope as they took Thunder Bay's Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute to extra points in the first set, but would lose, 26-24, 25-18, to miss their chance at championship play.
Fellow Penetanguishene school Le Caron participated in the 'A' competition in Oshawa and holds a slim chance of progress, but they will need to win today and hope for help.
