COLLINGWOOD -- The Barrie North Vikings will take on the Collingwood Fighting Owls in today's senior football championship game.

The Vikings are coming off a 14-6 win over the Bear Creek Kodiaks in their semifinal game, while the Fighting Owls easily defeated the St. Joan of Arc Knights, 43-1.

Collingwood will be trying to defend its Georgian Bay title.

Game time at Collingwood Collegiate is 1 p. m.

HUNTER LEAVES KNIGHTS

KITCHENER (SUN MEDIA) -- Tucker Hunter has left the London Knights.

The 19-year-old veteran and son of head coach Dale Hunter didn't accompany the OHL club to Kitchener for their game against the Rangers last night.

"He's concentrating on school," said London GM Mark Hunter, Tucker's uncle. "He's a good kid."

And a well-rounded one with several off-ice interests.

A year ago, Tucker was one of the OHL's top academic players. He achieved over 90% in his university entrance level classes and currently attends Western.

The six-foot-two, 204-pound Hunter entered his fourth year with the club coming off his most productive season -- a career-high six goals and 14 points and plus-nine rating in 62 games in 2008-09.

WELLS' SURGERY A SUCCESS

TORONTO (CP) -- Toronto Blue Jays centre-fielder Vernon Wells is expected to be ready for spring training after undergoing successful surgery on his left wrist, a team spokesman said yesterday.

The procedure was performed Thursday and repaired some cartilage damage in his left wrist, which he broke diving to make a catch against the Indians in 2008.

Wells struggled through perhaps his worst season as a pro in 2009, batting just .260 with 15 home runs, 66 RBIs while becoming a lightning rod for disgruntled fans disappointed in his performance.

The soon-to-be 31-year-old struggled with pain in his wrist over the summer and a decision to have the operation was made when it didn't subside once the season ended.

Wells hasn't had a healthy year since batting .303 with 32 homers and 106 RBIs in 2006, after which he signed a $126-million US, seven-year contract extension that runs through 2014.

He played through a shoulder injury in 2007 and broke his wrist and suffered a groin injury in '08. He also had a thumb injury in September.

STAMPEDER STABBED

CALGARY (CP) -- Calgary fullback Teyo Johnson is recovering after being stabbed in the back at a rave party early yesterday and will miss Sunday's West Division semifinal against the Edmonton Eskimos.

Police said Johnson was stabbed in the lower back during a fracas at the Calgary Stampede grounds around 1:15 a. m.

Officers were already on the scene when the skirmish started, according to Duty Insp. Rob Williams of the Calgary Police Service.

"Somehow an altercation broke out with a group of people," Williams said. "The officers approached where this melee had happened and one noticed blood on the back of this victim's shirt."

Johnson was transported to hospital with a single stab wound which was not considered life-threatening, police said.

MAJORS EDGE WOLVES

SUDBURY (CP) -- William Wallen had the only goal in the shootout to hand the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors a 6-5 victory over the Sudbury Wolves in Ontario Hockey League action last night.

Stuart Percy scored and added an assist for Mississauga (16-4-1), while Rob Flick, Jordan Mayer, Casey Cizikas, and Joseph Cramarossa all had singles.

Steve Reese had two goals and an assist for Sudbury (8-12-2), while John Kurtz scored twice and Peter Hermenegildo also had a marker.
