The twinkle toes of some of Barrie's celebrities will get a workout Wednesday night as they show off their dance moves for a worthy cause.
Dancing with the Stars Barrie is set to kick off tonight, putting some famous faces in the spotlight to dance their their hearts out to support literacy in Barrie.
"Everybody's really nervous and excited. Our local celebrities are getting in the competitive spirit," said Mona Tranter, owner of the Tranter Institute, which is hosting the fundraiser to benefit the Barrie Public Library. "I think some couples are more ready than others, but I think they'll all step it up once the competition begins."
The list of competitors includes: Janet Kemp of the Barrie's Business Improvement Association (BIA), Jamie Hall and Tara Dawn from B101 FM, Coun. Lynn Strachan, and Sybil Goruk, of the Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce. All participants will be paired with professional dancers from the Tranter Institute.
Tonight is the first of four competition nights at the Southshore Community Centre. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.
Other performances will take place on Nov. 10, 17 and 24.
"Everyone will perform (tonight) and the audience will have a chance to vote for who gets eliminated," Tranter said. "
The finale and gala evening will be on Dec. 13 at Gryphon Theatre in Georgian College.
Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Barrie Public Library "Branching Out" campaign to build a south-end satellite library branch.
"We're delighted about this fundraiser happening on our behalf," said Rosslyn Junke, of the library's capital campaign team. "This is definitely one of the bigger fundraisers for us.
"(Mona) wanted to lend her support to the library's cause, and we appreciate that," she added. "We've got people from our campaign team competing, so it's a lot of fun for them."
Tickets are still available tonight at the door, or online at www.tranterinstitute.com.
