Barrie native Mitchell Russell, Colts rookie Ryan Suzuki win silver

Barrie Colts rookie Ryan Suzuki and Barrie native Mitchell Russell won a silver medal together with Team Canada Red on Saturday at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Team Canada Red fell 6-4 to the United States in the gold-medal game.

The Americans opened up a five-goal lead less than 22 minutes in before Red began to chip away.

Nick Wong, who plays for the OHL’s Oshawa Generals, got the comeback started, Bowen Byram scored on the power play and Alexis Lafrenière redirected a feed to make it a 5-3 game after 40 minutes.

An empty-net goal late in the third period clinched the gold medal for the U.S. before Suzuki added one more to the Canadian total in the final minute.

Suzuki finished the tournament with seven points (3G, 4A) in six games, while Russell, a forward with the Owen Sound Attack, had a goal and an assist.
