CLEARVIEW TWP. - Fall colours were in full splendor when than 500 runners converged at Highlands Nordic in Duntroon for the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association’s (GBSSA) cross country running championships Thursday.

Runners started on the flats but the course wound its way up, around and down hills to end at the chalet on a cloudy, eight-degree Celsius day.

The top five runners in each division and top two schools move on to the Ontario Federation of Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships in Petawawa on Saturday, Nov. 4.

“For our school it’s been a fantastic day,” said Todd Hammond, physical education instructor at Collingwood Collegiate Institute (CCI).

“Our kids have been training really hard for the last two months. We’ve been trying to work on ourselves to be a team. It’s an individual sport but we run together and train together and we are really proud of how our teams did today.”

CCI teams qualified for the provincial championships in four out of six possible divisions; midget boys, junior girls, junior boys, senior girls.

Five individual athletes from CCI will also be competing; Sage Fry in midget boys, Sofie Ohrling and Allison McMullin for junior girls, Anna Carruthers for senior girls and Erik Ohrling for seniors boys.

Ohrling placed second behind Innisdale’s Myles Strano. Carruthers placed third behind Charlotte Wood and Gracelyn Larkin, both of Bracebridge Secondary.

Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary midget Emma Gosselin won her four-kilometre race, capping a season of consistent wins in the Georgian Bay series.

“It’s a pretty tough race. It’s muddy and hilly. It was pretty chilly,” she said.

Hammond said organizers expanded the qualifying series this year from Simcoe County to also include all of Muskoka/Parry Sound in a five-race Georgian Bay series.

“We go from Bradford to Huntsville. It’s a massive area of kids,” said Hammond.

“So now all the schools in Huntsville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Parry Sound, Muskoka is coming to all the races. And we added a race in Huntsville.

“We get to see each other earlier and spend more time racing together. It makes it a bit more competitive and really prepares all the schools for this,” he said during the awards ceremony.

The awards presented at Highlands Nordic also included individual and team awards for the Georgian Bay race series.

Collingwood won multiple boys and girls overall awards and the Golden Boot, which it has won 15 times in the last 17 years.

Gosselin won the midget girls award.
