Barrie Baycats remain undefeated with win in Brantford
The Barrie Baycats won their fifth straight game to open the Intercounty Baseball League season, defeating the Brantford Red Sox, 7-3, on Wednesday night at Arnold Anderson Stadium in Brantford.
Barrie (5-0) is one of two unbeaten IBL teams. The London Majors are 6-0.
The Red Sox fell to 1-5 with the loss.
The Baycats are in Kitchener to take on the Panthers on Thursday night.
In other IBL action on Wednesday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs improved to 4-2 after beating the Hamilton Cardinals at Christie Pits.
The Maple Leafs made the most of their five hits, scoring five runs in a 5-2 victory over the visiting Cardinals.
Daniel Szpik had the big swing, a solo home run – hit first of the season – in the Leafs' two-run fourth. That put Toronto ahead 4-1 and was a lead the home team wouldn't relinquish.
Jonathan Solazzo singled, doubled and drove in a run, while Jon Waltenbury went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.
The Leafs' patience at the plate resulted in eight walks, which kept the lineup moving.
On the mound, Marek Deska (1-1) went five innings for the win. He allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
For Hamilton, Chris Beer also connected for his first home run of 2017. Beer hit a solo blast in the top of the fourth.
Nate Mastervick singled, doubled and scored once atop the Cardinals' lineup. Jake Foden had an RBI, and Slater Frith singled twice.
Dave Ertl (0-1) took the loss, giving up two runs without allowing a hit in two innings. Ertl was hurt by three walks, and he didn't register a strikeout.
Hamilton dropped to 0-2.
