Man has backpack grabbed in Barrie

A man was punched in the face, while chasing a runner, after having his backpack grabbed in Barrie Monday.


At 1:30 p.m., a man was parking his vehicle at 177 Bayview Dr. and walking toward the residential building. He was approached from behind by a man who asked for a lighter for his cigarette.

When the man reached into his pocket, police said, the backpack slung over his shoulder was grabbed and the other man fled on foot.

He was chased, but not for long.

Police say the backpack's owner was stopped in his tracks when a man turned and punched him on the side of the face.

The man fled west toward Bayview Drive.

The backpack is black with a checkered pattern on the front and contained an iPad mini with charging cord and personal paperwork from UPAK Disposal.

Police describe the suspect as white, standing 5'11”, of medium build, long scraggly hair, reddish brown facial hair, scruffy appearance and wearing baggy clothing of an unknown colour.

Barrie officers flooded the area to search for the man, but with no luck.
