Championships in Barrie this weekend
This weekend, the 20th anniversary of the World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships will be taking place in Barrie. The event takes place at the Barrie Ball Hockey Club at 125 Ferndale Drive and features 54 of the top teams from across North America competing in three divisions: Men's Open, Men's B and Women's Open.
This year's event features teams travelling in from Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Montreal, Hull, Saskatoon and from all over southern Ontario.
"This weekend will be our 20th year of supporting the Barrie community with some major economic traffic. We would expect this event will contribute over $700,000 into the local economy," according to ballhockey.com president Brian Broley.
"This is the Stanley Cup of the outdoor game. Our trophies have the names of each player who has been on a winning team since we began these championships in 1996. And it is a pilgrimage for many to travel here and be a part of the event."
Games begin on Friday evening at 7 p.m. and continue through Sunday. The games are free to watch for spectators live at the club. The game will also be broadcast on RogersTV at a future date. You can get all the event previews, live results and more by visiting ballhockey.com.
