Here is a chance to explore the cuisine of two parts of the world at once.

Cravin the Flavin, which opened in early July at 51 Collier Street in downtown Barrie, is owned by Gina Serra, who is from Peru, and her husband, Sudesh Dadd-Dowlat, who is from Trinidad. The result is Peruvian and Caribbean  meals.

"We basically want people to have a home-cooked meal from South America and Trinidad, the kind of food that we grew up with," said daughter Julissa Dadd-Dowlat, who also works in the restaurant, which is takeout and delivery only.

Daily menu items include barbecue chicken, jerk chicken, super wings, steak sandwiches, veal sandwiches and jerk pork. There are also empaladas, a kind of South American meat patty, and both chicken and potato roti. Julissa said the chicken roti has been the most popular item on the menu so far.

A lunch special features a choice of jerk chicken, barbecue chicken or wings with yellow rice and a potato salad.

Weekend specials include jalea, which is shrimp, calamari and fish with yucca, a side of salsa and plantain chips, and barbecue short ribs.

Desserts include treats such as carrot cake and alfajores, which are shortbread cookies with a caramel-like filling
