Escape to the Mediterranean this long Barrie winter, at least gastronomically. The Middle East to be exact.
Sammy’s Middle Eastern Grill has been serving up delicious pitas and kababs in Barrie since 2001 when Sammy El Hallak opened up a takeout place on Collier Street. Six years ago, he moved down a few doors to 53 Collier, across from City Hall, where he offers a full restaurant.
“Basically, you’re getting authentic Mediterranean home-cooked food,” said El Hallak. “My customers stick with me forever.”
If you haven’t been in before, he recommends the mazza plate, a sampling of hummus, falafel, tahini, tzatzki, salad and mixed pickles, with a side of pita bread. Customers can also choose to add tabouleh and stuffed grape leaves.
Then there are the various pita sandwiches, chicken, lamb and beef kabobs, grilled vegetables, shawarma and even New York striploin, along with kafta, a juicy blend of lamb, beef, onions and spices. Also offered are soups, salads and a variety of appetizers, both hot and cold, including baba ganouge, fried tomato, fried eggplant and calamari. For dessert, there is baklava and cup of crème brule.
There are daily specials and the restaurant is licensed.
El Hallak said people shouldn’t be afraid the food is too spicy.
“If you want it spicy, you can make it spicy with our home-made hot sauce,” he said.
