BRADFORD — Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield is being honoured as the Simcoe County District School Board renamed a Bradford school after him.
Bradford Southwest Public School will officially be renamed Chris Hadfield Public School after school board trustees approved name in honour of the first Canadian to command the International Space Station during a recent five-month period.
Hadfield was also the first Canadian to walk in space after flying two shuttle missions in 1995 and 2001.
School principal Evelyn Alban said Hadfield is an inspiration to students and the name is a reflection of hard work and dedication.
“Chris Hadfield captured the imagination of Canadians during his recent space shuttle expedition that had him tweeting with school children across Canada and sharing photographs and music from space,” Alban said. “He is a wonderful role model as he exemplifies leadership, team work, discovery, exploration, creativity and a sense of adventure. Stories of Chris’ adventures and accomplishments inspire us and will help our students believe in themselves and set high goals.”
Students will continue to attend the current facility at 177 Church St. until the new school is finished construction scheduled for 2015.
