Chocolates and Valentine's Day are still sweetly synonymous.
They likely always will be, but more and more people are discovering delicious cakes and cupcakes as a way of showing their better half just how they feel.
Meeting that demand, helping folks to think outside the (chocolate) box, are Jen Mayrl and Michelle Doo, owners and operators of Cakes By Design in Barrie.
Between them, they have more than 25 years of custom cake experience and first opened the doors to their Toronto Street shop in 2004.
Including both Mayrl and Doo, five employees work at Cakes By Design.
According to Mayrl, “custom cakes and cupcakes for all occasions” make up the majority of business but “we also make pies, cookies and other sweet treats.”
Now seemed like a good time to ask Mayrl if she noticed any new consumer trends, ones that may affect a business such as Cakes By Design.
“Customers are looking for different and unique ways to say Happy Valentine's Day,” she said. “The tradition of flowers and chocolates is still nice, but we put a sweet twist on the occasion with chocolate-dipped strawberries, cupcakes and heart-shaped cookies and cakes.”
If you visit the Cakes by Design shop and ask Mayrl to recommend a tantalizing, sweet idea, crafted for the most romantic day of the year, she'll likely point you in this direction: “Oh, for sure, red velvet cupcakes. They have become a must for the occasion, topped with cream cheese icing. And remember, cupcakes can be made to look cute and pretty or super chocolaty and decadent to satisfy every taste.”
