Largest 6/49 win in Collingwood: official

COLLINGWOOD — Sharon Boyce had a special feeling about this ticket.

After having it sit around on her coffee table for a couple of weeks, Boyce checked her numbers and discovered she’d won $3.5 million on 6/49.

“I like the thrill of ‘maybe winning’, so I never check my tickets right away,” said Boyce on the phone from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s Toronto office. “But when I got this ticket, I had a feeling it was a good ticket.”

Boyce, who works in a local medical office, purchased the winning ticket for the Jan. 26 draw at Mac’s Milk on Cameron Street.

On Saturday, she spent some time on the phone with her sister, then headed upstairs to clean the bathroom.

“I just thought, ‘maybe I’ll go downstairs and check that ticket’, and see if my feeling was right,” said Boyce.

After checking the numbers online — twice — “I did my little lotto dance, then I called my sister again.

“She wouldn’t believe me; I took my laptop over to her place to verify the numbers.”

Boyce plays Lotto 6/49 on a regular basis, and her biggest win until now was around $80.

“I don’t have a lot of big plans; I’m going to look after my family, put some away for retirement, and buy a house,” she said. “I’m still going to work.”

Boyce said she only started her job last September, after spending her first 10 months in Collingwood looking for work. She moved here from Ottawa — where she had lived for 25 years — to be closer to family.

OLG spokesperson Sarah Kiriliuk says Boyce’s win is the largest to come out of Collingwood.
