Vehicle rolls and bursts into flames on Hwy. 400

A Barrie woman is dead after the Jeep she was driving struck the Dunlop Street bridge in the northbound lanes of Highway 400, early Wednesday morning.

According to provincial police, the 43-year-old woman was travelling north on the highway when, for unknown reasons, struck the bridge around 1:25 a.m.

The Jeep rolled several times and became engulfed in flames.

Police say some passing motorists stopped to help and pulled the woman from the burning vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre.

Her name is not being release until her next-of-kin has been notified.

"It (the vehicle) hit the centre steel bar, right at Dunlop Street," said OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford.

He said speed, road conditions and/or alcohol did not play a role in the crash.

The northbound lanes of the highway have now been re-opened.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Aurora OPP at 905-941-5777.
