Mohawk dashes Georgian's hopes
OTTAWA - The Mohawk Mountaineers put an end to the Georgian Grizzlies' gold-medal hopes with a 96-61 win in the semifinals at the OCAA men's basketball championships at Algonquin College, Friday.
Mohawk led from start to finish, jumping out to a 25-10 lead after the first quarter and taking a 48-28 lead at the half.
The Mountaineers' zone defence caused problems for the Grizzlies all night, leading to easy transition buckets, as Mohawk shot 55% from the field. Georgian could never get into a rhythm offensively and converted on only 29% of their shots (25/87).
Mohawk had five players score in double figures with Manny Campbell and Alex Reis leading the way with 17 points apiece. Shane Rowe led the Grizzlies with 27 points and 11 rebounds and rookie Ivan Ivic chipped in with 15 points and hauled down 10 rebounds.
Mohawk advances to Saturday's gold-medal game against the winner of the other semifinal game between Algoma and Humber.
The Grizzlies will take on the Fanshawe Falcons at 9 a.m. Saturday in the bronze-medal semi-final game.
