Police ID man killed on Hwy. 400 0

By Raymond Bowe, Barrie Examiner

The man struck and killed by a transport truck on Highway 400 Wednesday morning has been identified as Hugh Mayne, 78, of Midhurst.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford said the post-mortem examination showed that cause of death was consistent with the injuries sustained in the accident.

The crash happened around 4:30 a.m., in the northbound lanes between Essa Road and Dunlop Street.

Mayne's Ford Escape initially sustained minor damage to its left front corner after striking the middle guard rail. He was able to safely manoeuvre his SUV to the shoulder, but got out of his vehicle and stepped into a live lane where he was struck and killed instantly.

Why Mayne stepped out into traffic may never be known, Woodford said, adding the Midhurst man may have been disoriented from the initial crash, or may have been suffering from driver fatigue.

No charges will be laid.
