Kudos to MP for pushing tobacco act
The Canadian Cancer Society would like to thank Patrick Brown, Barrie MP, for his hard work and support in passing Bill C-32 (Cracking Down on Tobacco Marketing Aimed at Youth Act).
The adoption of this legislation shows Canada's global leadership in protecting all Canadians, particularly youth, from flavoured tobacco products marketed by the tobacco industry.
Bill C-32 was approved by the Standing Committee on Health and passed unanimously by the House of Commons and the Senate.
Mr. Brown is a member of the Health Committee.
Bill C-32 contains important measures including a ban on cigarettes, cigarillos and other tobacco products with flavours such as cotton candy, bubble gum and chocolate.
Far too often the media, and even the general public, focus on the political acrimony that shrouds our House of Commons.
That is why we felt it was important to voice our sincere appreciation when our elected representatives join together across party lines to pass laws that protect our children and help prevent cancer.
By working together on this important legislation, MPs like Mr. Brown have demonstrated that Parliament can rise to the challenge and work in the best interest of all Canadians.
We congratulate them for a job well done.
