School board OKs budget

The Simcoe County District School Board has approved its operating and capital budgets for 2009-2010.

Trustees approved a $17.9-million capital budget that includes money being transferred from reserves, as well as an operating budget of $473.5 million.

In the operating budget, $890,000 will be transferred from the board priorities fund to cover costs associated with reading recovery ($650,000) and computer software technicians ($240,000).

"Trustees are pleased to have approved another balanced budget that is fully integrated with our board goals and strategic priorities," said board chairwoman Diane Firman. "Throughout a challenging budget process, trustees carefully considered all aspects of potential budget decisions and listened to the voices of our public as we came to a final decision."

Brad Saunders, chairman of the finance standing committee, said deliberation was "thorough and at times intense" during eight budget-related meetings.
